Kulbeths go to Kill Devil Hills

Well , half way through the summer we decided we needed to take some kind of vacation, so after postponing and postponing, we finally made our way down to North Carolina for some beach time.  We stopped at a Bass Pro Shop on the way that has always looked intriguing.  It had some cool stuffed grizzlies and a huge fish tank that were fun to look at, but being the non-hunters we are, I think we can check that interest off our list.

Jane in particular was more than a little concerned that our destination's name was "Kill Devil Hills".  It ended up being the perfect place for some great beach time and very close to some other sights we wanted to see.
Adam's favorite thing was giggling while he chased the waves up and down.  Every once in a while he got bowled over by a big wave but that didn't seem to deter him.

Daddy took Leo out in the tube once or twice, but mostly he was content to eat the sand (why would even a baby do that more than once?!?!) and dig in the sand.
We learned one night in the pool that Jane feels no pain when she does a belly flop.  After declaring this she informed us that she would be happy to do 14 in a row for us.  And so she did!  I don't know why this was so funny but we just had to laugh every time we heard that slapping sound:)

The three big kids completely surprised us (and quite scared us) with their fearlessness.  They were in and under the waves the whole time!  Porter got stung on the back of the knees by a jelly fish, and we're grateful that's all it was because the beach had been closed down the day before we got there due to some sting ray sightings.

waiting outside a beach store while the shoppers finished up inside...
We stopped at the Roanoke State Park a few miles down the island to investigate the 'lost settlement'.  It was also interesting to learn that Roanoke was used as a safe haven for slaves seeking freedom during the Civil War.

Jockey's Ridge was another side stop just miles from our hotel.  Unbelievably giant, fine sand dunes in the middle of the island-awesome!  We stopped there our first evening but it was raining pretty good, so Aaron took the big kids (and had the time of their lives, so we heard) while Leo and I tried to warm up under the women's restroom hand dryer.  The next day we came back on our way to the beach.

We wanted to run and run and run all around the dunes, but every time we put this guy down on his own two feet, this is what he did.  I guess only his hands were interested in exploring.
Our last stop on the way out of town was the Wright Brothers Museum at Kitty Hawk.  Aaron remembered coming here as a kid and told our kids all about the first fliers.
I was touched by this plaque that showed the authentic wood and fabric from the Wright Brother's actual plane that Neil Armstrong took with him to the first lunar landing.  How far flight came along in only several decades!

Thanks for a great vacation Daddy!
