Several weeks into January, storm Jonas came to visit the East coast and left a lot of baggage--a good two feet of snow. Only twice since we moved here 12 years ago have we gotten that much snow and the last time was in 2009. Everyone in the DC area was so concerned about the 'big storm' that they neglected to really publicize the fact that the night before the storm we would get just a dusting after sunset. Because it was so cold (in the 20's), the roads froze immediately which was basically like driving on a sheet of ice. Lots of accidents and delays that night-including Aaron. The last 8 minutes of his 40 minute commute home that night took him 6 hours! He was at a stand still for most of the time because cars had slid off the road and were blocking the two lane road. He had almost resolved to sleep in the car when things started moving a bit and miraculously he was able to inch home unharmed. From his account many, many others were not so fortunate.
So here we are Friday afternoon...

...Saturday late morning...
...Saturday afternoon...
...and Saturday evening after a good shoveling. What was strange was when the blizzard winds picked up after lunch on Saturday. It made these swirly drifts like mountains in certain areas. Aaron took the older 3 out sledding about a half mile away right before the winds started and by the time they came home, they were literally crawling into the house on their hands and knees. Trudging through two feet is a lot different than walking in a few inches for sure!
The little boys got some outside time, but the snow was really too high for Leo to walk through. So I was super excited to see my friend's suggestion on facebook, to bring a bucket of the white stuff inside to play with instead-brilliant!
They dug and dug and dug and then we built mini snowmen-it was perfect!
The next day when it was time to really play, the kids were in heaven! In fact they were off school for a whole week. The only thing that would have made it better would be to avoid the stomach bug that hit about the same time the storm did. Low fevers, no appetites, diarrhea, and of course vomiting for 3 or 4 days each. The awful truth, but I think it's important to blog about 'real life'. People have been taking first and even second rounds of the yucky stuff off and on for 5 weeks now:( Thank goodness for lysol and gingerale! But the snow was a nice diversion:)

Oh goodness I am so sorry they were all so sick. That stinks!!! I'm glad the snow was fun though
You are nicest mom to let them bring snow into the basement to play with. Genius!
